Difference Between Router and Firewall

A router and a firewall are two different things, a router is a hardware device that provides connections to different devices. Whereas the firewall resides between the network and the system to filter the data going in and out of the system.

However, both can be used to filter traffic along with the access control list. The router works mostly at the hardware level. In contrast, the firewall is software-based. A router is a device used to install networks. In contrast, a firewall is considered as a system that also includes software and hardware.

Definition of Router

A router is a networking device that is used to check the physical address contained in a packet. It works on three layers of OSI – physical, data link, and network layers. the router reproduces the received signals In the physical layer. Similarly, the data link layer router attempts to verify the physical layer contained in the packet. Also, in the network layer, the router checks the network layer address.

A feature of a router is that it restricts the broadcast domain. The router is used to connect independent LANs together and is also capable of connecting WANs (wide area networks).

Features

It has physical and logical (IP) addresses assigned to each of its interfaces and specifically network adapters.
